Class VII: Operations with Integers

Explore integer addition, subtraction, missing numbers, sum–difference puzzles, number-line movement, and zero pairs.

Fact Sheet: Integer Operations

Integers include negative numbers, zero, and positive numbers. Operations with integers help us solve problems involving gains, losses, movement, temperature, debt, and height.

Addition: Moving right on a number line means adding a positive number. Moving left means adding a negative number.
Subtraction: Subtracting can be understood as finding the distance or movement from one number to another.
Sum–Difference Puzzle: If two numbers have sum 25 and difference 11, the numbers are 18 and 7.

Rules Hub

Same Sign Addition

Add the values and keep the sign.

-4 + -5 = -9

Different Sign Addition

Subtract values and keep the sign of the larger absolute value.

-8 + 3 = -5

Subtraction Rule

Subtracting an integer is adding its opposite.

7 - (-3) = 7 + 3 = 10

Zero Pairs

+1 and -1 cancel to make zero.

5 + (-5) = 0

Sum and Difference

Larger number = (sum + difference) ÷ 2

Smaller number = (sum - difference) ÷ 2

Check Method

Always check both conditions: sum and difference.

Generate practice on integer addition, subtraction, sum–difference puzzles, number-line movement, and real-life integer situations.

Real-World Use

Banking: Deposits are positive; withdrawals and debt are negative.
Temperature: A rise or fall in temperature can be modelled using integer addition.
Elevators: Moving above or below ground floors is integer movement.
