Class VII: Working with Fractions

Explore fraction multiplication, unit rates, โ€œofโ€ problems, simplification, comparison, and real-life fraction situations.

Fact Sheet: Working with Fractions

Fractions help us describe parts of a whole, parts of a collection, and rates like distance per hour.

Repeated Addition: 3 ร— 1/4 = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.
Fraction of a Quantity: 1/2 of 10 means 1/2 ร— 10 = 5.
Multiplying Fractions: Multiply numerators and multiply denominators, then simplify.

3 ร— 1/4= 3/4 km

Formula Hub

Whole Number ร— Fraction

n ร— a/b = (n ร— a)/b

Example: 3 ร— 1/4 = 3/4.

Fraction ร— Fraction

a/b ร— c/d = ac/bd

Example: 2/3 ร— 3/5 = 6/15 = 2/5.

Fraction of Quantity

a/b of n = a/b ร— n

Example: 3/4 of 20 = 15.

Simplify

Divide numerator and denominator by their common factor.

6/8 = 3/4.

Compare Fractions

Use common denominator or cross multiplication.

Unit Rate

Distance = rate ร— time.

1/4 km per hour for 3 hours = 3/4 km.
